Poster of Tommorow

Though posters are displayed in a public place as an announcement or advertisement, these days posters are limited to a piece of paper and particular place thus some pedestrians who pass by that street only can see.

This is art work from Jenny Holzer. In 1982, she presented her texts on the electronic notice board of Times Square.
The texts on the board emitting a series of unexpected phrases grabbed the attention of pedestrians whose average time of concentration is merely two to three seconds and aroused empathy among spectators in ways different from the art in the white cube. As her texts emitted a language which is a far cry from the stereotype, spectators reacted. It can be completed through the equivalence of her textual and spatial strategies.

The work making texts subject matter in open spaces using mapping for those unspecified is effective as poster because of its extensity of space and relative attention characteristic.

There is a limit in daytime. When utilizing shadow and dark wall or color light, we can enjoy all day.

Making Design Invisible

Good design is invisible

Do not show off your design.
Designer must consider what will lighten users.  Designer must think about user experiences that how they use and what they feel. Intrinsic capability of designer is utilizing techniques felicitously for user's greater concentration to the product.

Design Manifesto_Apple

Designed by Apple – Intention

If everyone
is busy making everything

how can anyone perfect anything?

we start to confuse convnenience
with joy
abundance
with choice
designing something requires
focus
the first thing we ask is
what do we want people to feel?
delight
surprise
love
connection
then we begin to craft around our intention
it takes time…
there are a thousand no’s for every yes
we simplify
we perfect
we start over
until everything we touch
enhances each life
it touches
only then
do we sign our work

Design Philosphy_ Think different - User friendly

Provide experience, not function
The value of the product is not the sum of the individual functions and subtracting function is better if it debase the quality of a product.

Appeal to emotion than reason
Emotion bring a conclusion even before starting the rational judgment. Appeal of Apple products is not try to convince. Just it creates an impression with the product. Finally it makes users to justify the reason why they purchase the product.

Not a single product, the platform
The basic philosophy of Apple's mobile devices is to develop and foster the platform that is based on the product. Ultimately, the customer loyalty is higher.
Apple is more favorable than Amazon because of its granting of pricing power.

The myth of originality and the joy of copying 2011

"Mediocre artists borrow, great artists steal" Pablo Picasso said.
As Piccaso, according to the passage, there is no true originality. Everything comes from somewhere, so everything contains elements of something else. I think it is an important perspective on these days because our culture is based on the mass communication. The public share the various sources of information, but rather it might limit the people to how much they can take in. In addition, as the writer said, for an amicable communication, we have to consider the style and commission of the public which is influenced by mass media. Therefore copyright wants originality, but commerce needs copying.
However, there is no same thing. The cohesion of the originality and reproduction comes to conversion. Thus, boundaries of originality and copying are gradually collapsed. That is why we have a novel approach about originality and copying.
In other words, trying to be original is meaningless. Try to be good or better is more significant deed.

Good vs. Bad Design _02

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe said that "Less is more", Venturi said "Less is bore" and after that Rem Koolhass said "More is more". Especially Venturi's thinking of architecture about forgotten symbolism of architectural form is in his book 'The Lesson of Las Vegas'.
Complexity, contradiction, symbolism, and popularity  are direct indication of his architectural thought.
Complexity is opposed concept to simplification and it is parallel to ambiguity.
As Venturi said the overlapping of disciplines may have diluted the architecture, but it enriched the meaning. Complexity which has a variety of meanings enriches the architectural contextualism.
Contradiction means coexistence of opposing elements making tension like traditional elements embodied in contemporary architecture.
Venturi said Modern architecture is progressive and puristic so these monumental features are unsuitable to contemporary architecture.
Finally, systems of space and structure are dependent on the program, but decoration is seperate from them.
Meaning of decoration is an independentely indirect and symbolic meaning not straightforward. Thus the expression system is seperate from the main structure and internal function. It has its own area.
Both Venturi and Bobby Young emphasized that symbolic relationship of urban space and program for communication. In conclusion, architecture is not for just aesthetic appreciation its for continuous practice with complicated urban relationship.

Good vs. Bad Design examples

Good design_

The paper clip called Gem clip is ubiquitous design, used worldwide to temporally has elegant loop within a loop of springy wire. It is simple, durable and surprisingly functional. This minimal design makes it to easy to automate cheap to produce and lightweight and easy to use.

Bad design_

This pedestrian overpass is excessive designed and it looks like a huge bug. Designer got no consideration of various pedestrians(users) for example the disabled. This is a form of ableism. And also When I cross this overpass, it obstructed my both side view. It doesn't have anything good in design.

Good vs. Bad Design

What I read that "How Good is Good?" and "Good Design is Goodwill" are talking about what good design is and its leverage. I think design is communication result and has positive effects on people. Though it seems like just decorative or adding a sense of class, design must consider the users, usability(user's experience), surrounding environment(from individual conditions to political climate) and relationship of client. Thus I find myself agreeing with Paul Rand on some points. In Good Design is Goodwill, he said designer and client's reciprocal relationship is crucial to corporate design. Also he claims that it is necessary to understand history, and he who understands history knows how to find continuity between that which was, that which is, and that which will be. There is thread of connections about comprehension of others and the spirit of the age. The ability to quickly see to the actual problem in same period and deeper understanding about trend makes intrinsic quality which is good design's value.

In How good is good by Stefan Sagmeister, he has different standpoints about visual impression. When Paul Rand emphasized visually perfection of part of design, Stefan Sagmeister set cause and meaning of design above visual interests. But he has tendency to ignore the aesthetic part instead of focusing on the intentions of design. Of course, meaning of design is critical but Design also has a power of visual image. Design which include affirmative meanings behind visual pleasure is most valuable in this world.
