Good vs. Bad Design

What I read that "How Good is Good?" and "Good Design is Goodwill" are talking about what good design is and its leverage. I think design is communication result and has positive effects on people. Though it seems like just decorative or adding a sense of class, design must consider the users, usability(user's experience), surrounding environment(from individual conditions to political climate) and relationship of client. Thus I find myself agreeing with Paul Rand on some points. In Good Design is Goodwill, he said designer and client's reciprocal relationship is crucial to corporate design. Also he claims that it is necessary to understand history, and he who understands history knows how to find continuity between that which was, that which is, and that which will be. There is thread of connections about comprehension of others and the spirit of the age. The ability to quickly see to the actual problem in same period and deeper understanding about trend makes intrinsic quality which is good design's value.

In How good is good by Stefan Sagmeister, he has different standpoints about visual impression. When Paul Rand emphasized visually perfection of part of design, Stefan Sagmeister set cause and meaning of design above visual interests. But he has tendency to ignore the aesthetic part instead of focusing on the intentions of design. Of course, meaning of design is critical but Design also has a power of visual image. Design which include affirmative meanings behind visual pleasure is most valuable in this world.
